There are few things that sound as great as a song with a talented female vocalist. This applies to nearly all genres of music, and female singers are responsible for some of the most successful songs in music history. The last 15 years have seen even more emerge, and the movement continues to gain steam.
My favorite genre of music is indie rock, and there's no shortage of female talent here. There are some great artists with a knack for writing songs and singing them, and I've been fortunate to enjoy many of them.

If you haven't heard of Chan Marshall, perhaps you've heard of Cat Power. Marshall goes by Cat Power as a stage name, and she's sat atop the indie charts for many years since becoming popular earlier this decade. Power writes original compositions, in addition to covering many classic songs.
An older singer who makes this list is Sharon Jones, though her music is anything but old. In an unlikely twist, she's probably more popular now (in her 50s) than ever before, thanks to the combination of Jones and the Dap Kings. Her music could be compared to some of the best Motown jams from the 60s and 70s.
Gaining steam is Shara Worden, also known as My Brightest Diamond. She has a pristine voice, and while her original work doesn't always highlight it, some of her cover songs certainly do. Worden has one of the best voices around. - 29772
