My Encounter with Del Potro

August twelfth, 2009 was a bright, sunny Wednesday morning in Canada. Because I was working at the Rogers Cup, I had access to the grounds and had specifically requested Wednesday off so I could go check out all the players' practices. It was undeniably a rich schedule with the best players in action throughout the day.

At eleven that morning, a pal and I walked over toward Court 4 where the world's No.1, Roger Federer, was set to get there at within 30 minutes. Already jam packed with about several hundred people, there was barely any room to move.

As the time neared, the court was packed with fans who eagerly waited to catch a glimpse of the Swiss Maestro. With the sun scorching at 35 degrees celsius, we watched him warm up and start hitting balls. To be frank, it was moderately ordinary and was scheduled to last 2 hours.

So, slowly, we squeeze out of the crowd and arrive at an open spot. I look up at Court four on the opposite side to see a tall, skinny player clad in a pink Nike T-shirt and white shorts hitting some balls. I try to look closer and in fact came to see it was Juan Martin Del Potro.

As he arrived at the exit gate, there had been 6 people waiting for him to have his autograph and he did sign. As he signed my picture and proceeded to my pal, I told him "I wish you good luck in your competition today."

He turned to me and had a huge grin on his face and insisted "Thank you so very much for your support." He seemed like he was very pleased with what I had told him.

As he won yesterday, the irony of this scenario just entered my mind. The fact that basically nobody was present to watch him and Federer had a ton of people. Occasionally, it's easier to be let alone than to be relentlessly followed.

Del Potro played a tremendous match this week and is totally worthy of his title. Great job! - 29772
