Could LeBron James End Up in NY?

Rumblings have surfaced recently that make it seem further likely that LeBron James will be coming aboard with the Newborn York Knicks after this season.

When LeBron becomes a free agent after the summer of 2010, the Cavs will remain in the best position to re-sign him. This is due to the Larry Bird clause, which lets a franchise to exceed the salary cap in order to extend their own free mediator.

The Knicks will give LeBron a huge agreement, however they will not have the ability to give LeBron as the same amount as the Cavaliers. So they became creative in the big city and came up with a way to bypass that annoying salary cap.

The buzz is that New York will not only give LeBron a max agreement, but additionally his own cable channel. You see, the Knicks are wholly owned by Cablevision, a cable television network.

LeBron would get income from the advertisers on his cable network. According to NBA rules, the franchise would not be allowed to arrange these endorsements/advertisers for LeBron; he might have to do that on his own. However I suppose we might all acknowledge that LeBron has enough connections in the commercial sphere to make that happen.

Rumor is that the television network might broadcast replays of Knicks games (whose rights belong to Cablevision), as well as other content about James, the Knicks, and the NBA. Some have even forecasted that Nike might look to be drawn in and produce their own TV show.

The huge issue is whether the NBA would agree to this. It seems to be wholly within league rules. The cable television network might be seen as a secondary advantage of playing in NY, similar to various other marketing perks that come from playing in a certain city. The income would be viewed as non-basketball related revenue.

This is a brand new and out of the ordinary twist in the LeBron-to-be-a-free agent saga. The wide-ranging consensus has been that Cleveland is winning the race. Perhaps that is starting to change? - 29772
